1.Define non-renewable – Humans cannot create more of it once it is gone 2. Why is oil valuable? It is only found in a few places on earth. It is nonrenewable. It can be refined into many different products you use daily. 3. What is OPEC? Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries/They control price by regulating the supply. 4. Define ‘standard of living’ – How rich or poor a country is. Oil Brings Changes to SWA

How did oil help the Middle East? How has oil wealth created problems in the Middle East? It has made the Middle East wealthy and powerful. Oil production has made the Middle East a major factor in the world economy and politics. Countries of the Middle East that had large oil deposits were able to raise their standard of living by building schools, roads, hospitals, water and sewage treatment plants, and some provided free medical care for its citizens. Created new jobs. It created a large gap between the rich and the poor. Oil has caused conflict in the region. When workers from countries with a large poor population come to the Gulf region to work, they are often treated as second-class citizens. Countries want more land for more oil
