The Need Western Delaware and Chester counties experienced explosive population growth over the past five years which is expected to continue through the next decade Existing senior population coupled with aging baby boomers will create an unprecedented demand for healthcare services There are fewer hospitals in the region today than 10 years ago. The last new acute care hospital in Delco opened in 1963 and in Chesco in 1959. Delco hospitals are concentrated toward the eastern end of the county.
The Need Based on population growth and an aging factor, inpatient bed demand is projected to increase from 384 in 2004 to 475 in 2012, an increase of 91 beds Over 1,000 area residents leave the state for inpatient care in Delaware State hospitals Today’s consumers demand state-of-the-art healthcare and will not compromise on quality and the latest technology
Why Concord Township Determined general need Looked for specific sites in Chesco/Delco that are natural extensions of the existing MLH service area Considered more than 25 sites Concord site best met selection criteria
Community Feedback 1,000 area residents interviewed 88% agree that the facility will meet their healthcare needs 85% agree that the site is a good location The primary reason for positive interest in the proposed facility at this site was the proximity to quality healthcare it afforded consumers
Community Feedback The average travel time for many residents to the proposed site would be less than it takes to travel to the facility they currently use Most would like to have emergency, ambulatory and inpatient services closer to home
