Dangers Posed by Vehicle Loading Cranes Demonstrate the Need for Proper Crane Training

To use any mobile plant safely, the operator needs to receive the proper training and to assess every situation on a case by case basis, implementing control measures that are required to complete the job safely.

Vehicle loading cranes, however, pose an added challenge for those who use them; unlike other mobile cranes, the outer boom on a vehicle loading crane is turned upside down when locked into the travel position. This, and the fact that workers haven't always followed the manufacturers' operating instructions, have led to some fatal injuries at worksites around Queensland.

Safety Risks Posed by Vehicle Loading Cranes Because the crane boom turns upside down when in the travel position, the way controls are used to move different parts of the equipment changes, depending on the boom's position at the time

Unless the vehicle loading crane is equipped with a remote control system, workers can be forced to operate the crane from a control panel that's within the crush zone

Prevent Accidents with Vehicle Loading Crane Training & Control Measures Tragic incidents, like those mentioned above, can be prevented when workers have received vehicle loading crane training, always adhere to the crane's operating manual,

and if appropriate control measures are implemented to ensure risk is reduced. For information on upcoming crane training offered at Lifting Skills, check out our website6)

Suggested Control Measures: Purchase a vehicle loading crane that can be operated remotely. Operating the equipment remotely not only ensures the worker is out of the crush zone but also gives the operator a better view of the crane

Anyone operating a crane with a capacity of 10 metre tonnes or more must possess a high risk work licence Keep the operator's manual on hand and ensure anyone operating or working with the equipment are trained and experienced An operator should never position the boom above their head

Check the equipment to ensure it's been properly maintained and is in good working condition, before starting work If you're an employer, equip your workers with the skills and knowledge they need to operate their equipment safely and efficiently. Vehicle loading crane training is a worthwhile investment that will be recouped quickly in a work environment that's safer for everyone involved.
