Some considerations and ideas for the (next) future Roberto Barbera University of Catania and INFN IWSG’10

Sandra Gesing Science Gateway Definition (do we agree ?) Community-developed set of tools, applications, and data Integrated via a web portal or a suite of applications, usually in a graphical user interface Customized to meet the needs of the targeted community Grid Science Gateway Developer Administrator Authentification User Cloud InternetServer

Considerations from IWSG’10 (1/2) Lots of different implementations in various contexts and domains; Diffused adoption of JSR 168/286 standards to create portlets; GridSphere and Liferay mostly used as portlet containers; Integration/control of Instrument Elements along with Computing Elements and Storage Elements; Integration of workflow engines but not general interfaces are available.

Considerations from IWSG’10 (2/2) Several «parallel» implementations; Solutions are usually based on a specific middleware and are difficult to be modified to use other middleware as back-end; Interest in making certificate request and management unnecessary or, at least, transparent to the end user but… …authentication and authorization are managed in several different ways, not all of them always fully compliant with strict GSI and PKI policies;

An opportunity to further collaborate: FP7-INFRASTRUCTURES call («all 9»)

Examples of activities (2/2)

Ideas for a possible project Create a library of portlets to be re-used in many Science Gateways Systematize authentication and authorization issues Carry out training activities both on developing and using Science Gateways Develop/integrate the «Grid layer» Build Science Gateways as use cases from some VRCs; – any connection to ESFRI projects ? Continue the series of IWSG workshops in alternation with similar events in US Duration: 24 months (or 36 months) Total EC requested contribution: < 1.5 M€ (in case of 2 years)

Possible partners INFN NICE ??? US Organisations ? – If yes, as full members or «external supporters» ? Who’s willing to coordinate it ?
