The pharaoh Aknatonm, built temples and palaces there. He intended it to be the capital of Egypt. Today the temples and palaces have gone, but the tombs that were cut into the hills remain.

It is very fertile agricultural area. It is famous for its waterwheels. They were built in the third century BC. They were designed to lift water from the river to the level of the fields. This water was used for irrigation. There is a group of seven waterwheels to the north of the city.
