The National Training Center FAMILY ADVOCACY PROGRAM

The National Training Center Family Advocacy Program The Family Advocacy Program (FAP) respond to reports of child abuse/neglect and domestic abuse in military families. Collaborate with state and local civilian social services, law enforcement and medical agencies to provide a coordinated community response and support for service members and their families Support victims with trained domestic abuse victim advocates to include a full range of support services.

The National Training Center Active-Duty Domestic Violence Women make up about two- thirds of victims and men about one –third. The highest rates of domestic violence within the military occur within the Army, followed by the Marines, Navy and then the Air Force

The National Training Center State of California VS Military Definition of Domestic Abuse in the State of California Physically hurting or trying to hurt someone; Sexual assault; Making someone reasonably afraid; harassing, stalking, threatening, or hitting someone; disturbing someone’s peace; or destroying someone’s personal property. Abuse can be kicking, shoving, pushing, pulling hair, throwing things, scaring or following you, or keeping you from freely coming and going. Domestic violence means abuse committed against: Current or former spouse Boyfriend / girlfriend Someone you have a child in common with Someone you live(d) with, or someone you are related to through blood or marriage The Department of Defense Definition of Domestic Abuse: Domestic Violence: An offense under the United States Code, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, or State law involving the use, attempted use, or threatened use of force or violence against a person of the opposite sex, which is: A current or former spouse. A person with whom the abuser shares a child in common. A current or former intimate partner with whom the abuser shares or has shared a common domicile. –Sharing a common domicile living in the same residence for at least 30 days (Army housing standard).

The National Training Center Financial Abuse Not allowing a partner to see bills Forcing someone to ask for money Hiding money Hiding credit cards Excessive spending Not letting a partner see bank records, paycheck stubs, etc.

The National Training Center Reporting Options Unrestricted Reporting Army Policy favors unrestricted reporting Command and investigative services notified Allows victim to receive: –Medical treatment –A forensic examination –Advocacy services –Clinical Counseling –Pastoral Counseling –Protective services Restricted Reporting Does not initiate the investigative process, neither law enforcement nor the command are notified. Allows the victim of domestic abuse to confidentially disclose the incident to the Victim Advocate, the FAPM and social workers. Allows victim to receive: –Medical treatment –A forensic examination –Advocacy services –Clinical Counseling –Pastoral Counseling
