SUPPORTING AND CONCLUDING SENTENCES

GOOD SUPPORTING SENTENCES Good supporting sentences are related to the topic sentence. Supporting sentences give information that supports and explains the topic of the paragraph. They answer questions _ who? What? Where? When ? Why? and how? and give details.

KINDS OF SUPPORTING SENTENCES Explain : The family moved from the village to the capital for economic reasons. Describe: she lived in a lovely, three-story castle surrounded by a forest. Give reasons: Larry finally quit his job because of the stressful working conditions. Give facts: more than ten percent of the university’s student population is international. Give examples: oranges and grapefruits grow in California. Define: Many tourists visit Bangkok, which is the capital and largest city in Thailand.

THE CONCLUDING SENTENCE The concluding sentence is the last sentence of the paragraph. It brings the paragraph to a logical conclusion. Characteristics of Effective Concluding Sentences: Review main points mentioned in a paragraph Restate the topic sentence or make a prediction about some aspect of the topic. Are found at the end of a paragraph Do not introduce new ideas or topics

A TOPIC SENTENCE gives the MAIN IDEA of the paragraph. SUPPORTING SENTENCES support the TOPIC SENTENCE (main idea). CONCLUDING SENTENCE/S sum up the paragraph and tell the reader that you have finished your discussion. Example: TOPIC SENTENCE: 1. There are many different ways of using eggs in cooking. SUPPORTING SENTENCES: 2. They can be boiled lightly and eaten with toast. 3. Hard boiled eggs are good for picnics, sandwiches or use in salads. 4. Fried, poached and scrambled eggs are commonly eaten at breakfast, while an omelette provides a light and nourishing meal at any time. 5. For an exotic touch, eggs can be curried or used in sauces such as mayonnaise and hollandaise sauce. 6. To give lightness and substance, eggs are usually added to cakes and pastries.
