Navigation through the course will occur by clicking on the following action buttons located in the lower right corner of each screen: The HOME button will be placed in the center of each slide and will bring you to the Table of Contents for further navigation. The NEXT and BACK buttons will move you through the course content. The EXIT button will be placed at the end of each unit and will exit the unit and return you to the course menu.

This course is meant to be self-paced, though there will be opportunities to interact with your local and global JPIC groups. Course content and activities should be completed in the order that they are presented to maximize student success. The Table of Contents will be your starting point for each Unit

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to: describe the range and types of water-related disease understand the physical processes by which inadequate sanitation undermines the quality and safety of drinking water understand the negative effects of turbidity and biological oxygen demand on surface water quality describe the how various water pollutants engender biological oxygen demand in surface water assess the relative effectiveness of source-focused and household-focused approaches to water purification

READINGS

As you read the material for this unit, think about how best to answer the following questions: 1.Can you distinguish among the factors that influence access to clean water and adequate sanitation? Are you conversant with the terms used to discuss these factors? 2.What are the causes of waterborne diarrheal disease? What is the specific target of techniques to combat waterborne diarrheal disease, and what methods can be used to do so?

3.Under what circumstances might addressing sanitation issues be the best approach to improving drinking water? Under what circumstances might it be better to leave sanitation aside and focus directly on purifying water for drinking? 4.What are the approaches and techniques for combating waterborne disease at the household level?
