Making Sense of a Different Tomorrow Presentation at the Annual NACUBO 2016 Annual Meeting Montreal, Canada | July 18, 2016 Stephen Murgatroyd, PhD Chief Innovation Officer Contact North | Contact Nord

Around the World universities and colleges are... In transition, responding to – Austerity and new financial realities – Changing demographics – Changing expectations from governments who are pursuing both a skills agenda and new demands for accountability – New technologies which are changing what learning, assessment, credit and support systems looks like – New entrants to the market creating new competitive forces – New models for credentials

What colleges and universities around the world are doing is... Seeking sustainable new markets – e.g. using MOOCs to attract potential learners, offering flexible programs, seeking to attract ”new” to post-secondary students Seeking to reimagine their business processes - e.g. Kentucky’s modular, stackable short courses, which carry partial credit, work-based learning credits, new approaches to competency- based learning Seeking to rethink the role of faculty - shifting from sage on the stage and focusing much more on learner engagement Thinking differently about their value proposition…

In Canada, there is a measured, careful response to these transitional shifts… Focusing on sustainable change Encouraging differentiation and fostering co-opetition Reaching out to under-represented groups Looking at new financial models and frameworks - exploring changes to the Carnegie unit for both universities and colleges while at the same time ensuring affordability Strengthening the focus on skills, knowledge and capabilities - especially with respect to apprenticeship Encouraging innovation in teaching and learning while strengthening quality Expanding reach of institutions, not just within Canada but internationally

Real Innovations Relevancy – Ryerson University Incubator rated #1 in North America – Redesign of the Red Seal program for many trades to permit greater flexibility – Public:Private partnerships for trades – e.g. Siemens and Mechatronics across Canada Learning innovation – Real innovations in work-based learning accreditation at Thompson Rivers – Niche programs – MBA for Hockey Management – teachonline.ca has over 125 specific innovations from colleges and universities across the province – Significant innovations in blended learning, professional learning and Francophone education Business Process Innovation – Collaborative purchasing through e-Procurement and Push-Pull Buying – Integrated “back-end” operations across institutions – Collaborative use of Open Educational Resources ( OER)

5 Challenges for Canada Strengthening skills - increasing access to and success in apprenticeship Strengthening collaboration and reducing competition - e.g. colleges collaborating on learning innovation, universities offering joint programs Increasing flexibility for learners Increasing learner mobility within a province and between provinces / internationally Strengthening links with the private sector for research and learning
