The Need for Student Electronic Portfolios BY. TIARE AHU (CONSTANCE PARRISH)

What is a Electronic Portfolio? Student’s make electronic portfolios using technology, Internet, CD- ROM, video, animation or audio. This short video gives a small look into e portfolios. Portfolios are a great way to store all the students work in one location

What Does a Student Gain from a Electronic Portfolio? When a student makes a portfolio they are building a page about what best describes them as a person. It makes the lesson fun, interesting, engaging, and a way for students to express themselves. As a teacher it is a great way to assess what the child has learned over the year.

How is Assessment from a Electronic Portfolios different than Tradition Assessment Electronic Portfolios engage the child and installs the want to expand their knowledge. Traditional Assessments doesn’t involve the skills needed to be a 21 st century learner.

Benefits for Students Completing Written or Video Reflections  When a student can give written or video reflection on an assignment the teacher can easily grade and give fast feedback  The student can ask questions and share thought that they might not feel conferrable saying in front of a class.  Parents can be an active part in their child’s education by seeing work and teachers feedback  Students can use their skills as a 21 st century learner to express themselves  Students can see their improvement over time from pass reflections  Gives the teacher insight to what the student is learning and what needs improvement  Students can share thoughts and viewpoints with classmates in a open environment

Challenges in Trying to Implement e-Portfolios with your Students  The video earlier about the importance of a teacher having a e- Portfolio. This is a great way to learn the layout and what you can do.  I strongly suggest researching and studying the software. You don’t have to be a master at fixing problems but having a good understanding will make the lesson and experience go a lot smoother.  Not all students have a understanding of technology so at first there can be a lot of confusion and stress but it’ll get better as they get used to it
