Example to Support Completion of page 1 DOUBLE BED

Page 1 Support Chosen Product:- Double Bed Frame Design IssuesJustification Function I would like to design a bed the can comfortably sleep two people. I would also like to consider some secondary functions which offer better product value for money. Ergonomics I would like to ensure that the bed frame I design considers the length and width of adults. Specifically the 95 th percentile of adults as this will ensure the product is suitable for more people. Physiological data should also be considered to make sure it supports peoples body weight. Aesthetics It is important to me that the bed frame appeals to the end user, appeals to the target market and potentially fits into a range of products. Safety Safety is important to me as the product should comply with relevant safety standards to ensure the end user is not harmed during use. As the product is self assembly I would like the product to be easily assembled but still remain safe to use. Materials Most self assembly manufactures make use of man made boards. I would like to make use of these materials to reduce costs through transportation and sustainability of raw materials. Standard components will keep costs down and aid with self assembly. Durability Designing a product that is durable is important as I would like the end user to be able to make use of my product for a number of years. Considering materials and assembly techniques carefully will ensure my product is durable. Lets take an product which could be self assembly and highlight 6 design issues from FEEDSCAMP. To justify each design issue you should explain WHY the design issue is important and NOT what the product MUST do. DOUBLE BED

Page 1 Support Analysis – explore each of the design issues in more detail. Mind map would be the best technique! Website used for example - DOUBLE BED

Page 1 Support Good use of time…Bad use of time… You could spend a vast amount of time analysing each of the design issues however it should only focus on the important areas. Focus on the important materials. I focused on man made materials because most self assembly furniture is made from these types of materials. Naming every material known to man under each area of materials. Can you buy self assembly products made of Oak or Beech? Be realistic! What product you have selected will determine which areas to focus on. Lighting may be mainly plastics and metals for example. Think about this for every area of your mind map… DOUBLE BED

Page 1 Support This table is essentially a mini specification. What have you identified as being significant to include in your product. We’ll use the double bed as an example… 1 Function – My double bed must support two grown adults comfortably. It will also include a secondary function of storage under the bed. It must be self assembly. 2 Ergonomics – My double bed will be long enough and wide enough for two people. It will must support the weight of two adult people. 3 Safety – My double bed must meet all BSI standards and provide adequate support for two people. It must also be safe for the user to make use of storage. 4 Durability – My double bed must be made from durable materials that last for a prolonged period of time. 5 Materials – My double bed must be from man made boards with a veneer finish. My double bed will be assembled using standard components e.g. dowels 6Aesthetics – My double bed will be modern in style and have a neutral colour scheme. DOUBLE BED This should give you a rough specification for your product and allow you to start developing some rough ideas with these points in mind. Recommended Time =1.5 hrs max
