Bell-Ringer 11/9: Spanish Absolutism If you were an absolute monarch… 1. What could you do to strengthen your kingdom? (nation) 2. Who or what might help unify your kingdom? (What unifies a nation?) 3. Who or what might stand in your way? (What weakens a nation?)

Absolutism and Spain Objective: Describing the causes and effects of absolutism, especially with Spain Essential Question: How did absolutism arise in Spain with Charles V and Philip II? What are its positive and negative effects for Spain?

Absolutism Absolute monarch: king or queen holds all power within their state’s boundaries. Their goal is to control every aspect of society. They believed in divine right: God created the monarchy and the monarch acts as God’s representative on Earth. They are accountable only to God, not his or her subjects.

Causes of Absolutism Decline of feudalism and growth of national kingdoms (remember the crusades…??? ) Rise of towns and middle class (MC) – Why would the MC support monarchs? Colonization (why/how?) Decline of Church authority (why/how?) Warfare (why/how?)

Effects of Absolutism Monarchs regulate religious and social gatherings (why?) Monarchs create new bureaucracies (why)? Monarchs increase the size of their courts and palaces
