The Big Three Motivations The major motivations for European exploration can be lumped into three categories “God, Glory, and Gold,” were the big three motivations for European exploration.

GOD One motive was religious, the desire to spread the Christian faith to native peoples around the world. Many Christians of the time felt it was their duty to spread Christianity – They felt non-Christians were doomed to spend an eternity in hell so, they wanted to tell people how not to end up there – They also believed Europeans were racially superior to other people around the world. Fear and distrust of differing ideas was another motivation to convert people to Christianity

GLORY Adventure and glory comprised another motive for European expansion. As European nations were formed, people from different countries were eager to prove their nation was THE BEST! They would conquer lands in the name of their king or queen. Europeans often had more advanced technology and weaponry and saw this as evidence of their superiority.

GOLD The desire for wealth was a large part of European expansion. Europeans hoped to find precious metals (gold, silver, etc) They also wanted to expand trade with the East, especially trade in spices and other exotic goods they could not get in Europe.

Activity #2: Examining Columbus  Perspective #1 Together, let’s read the Columbus poem and reasons to celebrate Columbus day. Next, complete the following: Creative Competition! 2. Hiyo! First, respond to the following question: What does the poem teach kids about Columbus? 3. Next, write 6 more lines to the poem. You can do it! If you finish early come look at some children’s books on Columbus from our very own library and Witch Hazel’s!
