In the 1400s, Europeans began to explore the world. Today we will try to find out why Europeans did this

A Map of the Known World, mid 1400s 5 min. with a partner: 1.What do you see in this map that you recognize? 1.What is missing or inaccurate? 2.Why are some parts of the world more accurate?

The Big Three Motivations The major motivations for European exploration can be lumped into three categories “God, Glory, and Gold,” were the big three motivations for European exploration.

GOD One motive was religious, the desire to spread the Christian faith to native peoples around the world. Many Christians of the time felt it was their duty to spread Christianity – They felt non-Christians were doomed to spend an eternity in hell so, they wanted to tell people how not to end up there – They also believed Europeans were racially superior to other people around the world. Fear and distrust of differing ideas was another motivation to convert people to Christianity

GLORY Adventure and glory comprised another motive for European expansion. As European nations were formed, people from different countries were eager to prove their nation was THE BEST! They would conquer lands in the name of their king or queen. Europeans often had more advanced technology and weaponry and saw this as evidence of their superiority.

GOLD The desire for wealth was a large part of European expansion. Europeans hoped to find precious metals (gold, silver, etc) They also wanted to expand trade with the East, especially trade in spices and other exotic goods they could not get in Europe.

Please put an “A” for agree or a “D” for disagree next to each statement `1) Christopher Columbus is the founder of our nation. 2) Money drives people to do things they might not do otherwise. 3) Columbus Day should NOT be a National Holiday. 4) Christopher Columbus is a hero. 5) Christopher Columbus was the first person to say that the earth was round. 6) Those that have money should have the power. 7) Without Christopher Columbus there would be no United States of America today. 8) It is okay to take any steps necessary to accomplish your goals, no matter who gets hurt in the process. 9) It is not Christopher Columbus’ fault that the Natives died. 10) Christopher Columbus was NOT a good man. 11) Even though native people died after meeting explorers, their deaths were a necessary step in establishing the first colonies in America. 12) In order to appreciate our country, we must appreciate Christopher Columbus. 13) Christopher Columbus should be the only explorer that kids learn about because he is the most important.
