Effects– Changes in Japan Causes--Influences Effects– Changes in Japan Prince Shotoku sent missions (scholars, artists, and Buddhist monks) to China in 607 Japan became more like the Tang Dynasty of China. They set up a system of official ranks and duties that were learned about through missions. Japan wrote their history like the Chinese had written their own history. The Japanese also adopted the Chinese calendar. Japan had only spoken, not written, their language until around 500. They adapted Chinese characters to form their own written language. Shinto and Buddhism became equally apart of Japanese culture and beliefs. Japan looked to China as a model government. Contact with mainland China inspired language change. Buddhist monks arrived in Japan in 538.
