We think The Harlem Art was optimistic rather than pessimistic because they thought about the good and positive aspects rather than thinking about all the bad that was going on during the time period. Many of the artist were happy because of the opportunity that they got to publish their art and attain wealth. The artist used the art to express the feelings that they had that otherwise they couldn’t say in writing. They were excited to have the freedom to paint.

I think that we would be excited despite all of the challenges because you have something to live for. You push through the challenges because you never had the opportunities that you now have.

We think Lawrence chose this because his parents were considered the first wave of the migration. He illustrates African- Americans who moved to the north in search for a better life. He had all of the ideas and was persuaded by his teachers and friends to paint them out.

In his painting there is a reoccurring idea of working for a better life. You can also see a contrast of colors in this paintings. It’s a narrative collection of the people migrating, getting jobs, and towards the end getting the freedoms that everyone else has.

We picked panel number 25 because we related it to the Dust Bowl. People were leaving all they had to seek better working environments were they could prosper. In the picture the description says that after a while some communities were left almost bare do to the migration.

Literature of Harlem The significant characteristics of the literary in this period was the influence of slavery and folk traditions. Another influence were slaves dreams to own land. The transformation from the Old Negro to the New Negro was a significant change. People saw opportunity in more industrial places like the North. One of the writers who influenced The New Negro movement was Locke Other influential writers were Cullen, McKay, and Helene Johnson. They wrote in a way that captured a more sophisticated outlook on African Americans.

Poetry The Weary Blues was different from the other poems because it had a more lyrical feel to it compared to the other poems which are more like short stories. The poem, The Weary Blues, was classified as Jazz poetry because it painted a picture with a rhythm of jazz in your head.

Hughes felt like he slept in “ten thousand beds” because he was constantly moving among households and didn’t have a stable home. He childhood defiantly influenced his poetry. He included himself in the poetry that he wrote. Often talking about the dreams that he wanted and couldn’t achieve.

Hughes’ background influenced his works in many ways. One example is how he got “discovered.” Hughes was working as a busboy in a hotel and decided to put three of his poems beside the plate Vachel Lindsay in the dinning room. This led to a scholarship to Lincoln university

Hurston studied anthropology. She rejected the conventional academic anthropology because of her heritage. In 1937 she wrote her second novel that was controversial among blacks because of her refusal to portray blacks as victims.

Talented Tenth The talented tenth was a leadership class of African-Americans in the twentieth century Their goal was to establish colleges to train black teachers and elites.
