2 RENAISSANCE/REBIRTH (1920s)
The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement the lasted from the 1920s to the 1930s. At the time, it was known as the "New Negro Movement.”

The Harlem Renaissance was centered in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City.

During the early 20th Century, Harlem became home to a growing "Negro" middle class. They rejected the stereotypes of the blackface and minstrel show traditions.

As life in the South became more difficult, African Americans began to migrate north. The Great Migration of African Americans to northern cities allowed them to develop their own culture.

Black writers, musicians, and artists led the cultural rebirth northern cities, especially Harlem. Although “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was written in 1900, it became popular in the 1920s.

African-American art history begins in the 1920s as black pride is embraced in their work. Palmer Hayden and Aaron Douglass are considered some of the best artists of the Harlem Renaissance.
