Challenging Homophobia and Homophobic Language

Homophobia is rooted in an irrational fear that leads to hatred, victimisation & intolerance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Homosexuality – Having feelings for, or being sexually attracted to people of the same sex To help you understand…

Some thing that breaks, or is stupid, or is unwanted is not “gay”. It is just broken, stupid or not wanted

Using the word “gay” as an insult is homophobic So are these words

Calling someone “gay” as a way of suggesting there is something wrong with being lesbian or gay is homophobic

In the UK homophobic behaviour is recognised in law as a hate crime

Hate Incident is when the victim perceives that something motivated by prejudice or hate has happened to them but it is not a criminal offence Hate Crime is any hate incident perceived by the victim as being motivated by prejudice or hate which constitutes a criminal offence,

LGBT people have significantly higher than average rates of anxiety, depression, self- harm and suicidal behaviour, as well as higher problem drug and alcohol use.

Consequences of homophobia 44% of LGBT pupils who experience homophobic bullying will skip school because of it

Consequences of homophobia 1 in 3 LGBT pupils who experience homophobic bullying change their plans for future education because of it.

Consequences of homophobia Nearly 25% LGBT pupils have tried to take their own lives at some point. Compared to 7% of all young people

Consequences of homophobia Over half of young gay people will deliberately harm themselves Compared to 1 in 15 of all young people.

FACT: People do not choose their sexual orientation….

FACT: People do not choose to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender

People do choose to be homophobic

We do not tolerate homophobia at this school Homophobic language is not accepted at this school

If you hear or see homophobic behaviour or language we would like you to stop it If you hear or see homophobic behaviour or language we need you to report it
