Group 4 Project 2015 Threats to Biodiversity

Group 4 Project- Overview Must be based in science Addresses aims 7/8/10 7. develop and apply the students’ information and communication technology skills in the study of science 8. raise awareness of the moral, ethical, social, economic and environmental implications of using science and technology 10. encourage an understanding of the relationships between scientific disciplines and the overarching nature of the scientific method

Group 4 Project- Overview The project may have a hands-on practical action phase or one involving purely theoretical aspects. It could be undertaken in a wide range of ways Designing and carrying out a lab investigation or fieldwork Collating, manipulating and analyzing data from other sources, such as scientific journals, environmental organizations, science and technology industries and government reports Designing and using a model or simulation This year’s topic is Threats to Biodiversity

Tips on Collaboration Work together in ALL phases of the project If you do individual work, such as small parts of research, schedule times for feedback and evaluation as a team Ensure that all members of the group understand all aspects of the group’s work. No one should be an “island” Keep a record of your discussions and decisions during the project, and make sure all members are making significant contributions Attendance counts!!! All members need to come to class during ALL days of Group 4 work.

Requirements Make a PPT/Google Docs presentation that your group will present to the class Use graphs, visuals where appropriate You are graded on the quality of the PPT, the quality of the information, and the quality of your oral presentation Written Report Formal report of your findings (include pics/etc) This will go in as a lab report grade….make it gooooood! Minimum of 12 mins; maximum of 20 minutes After 20 minutes you will be cut off ALL members of group must speak during the presentation Dress up on the day of your presentation Turn in all required materials

Requirements Things to turn in on due date: Friday 11/06/15 Digital presentations shared to Mrs. M (Must be in Google Slides) Printed out (hard copy) Written Report Informal Research notes for whole group (can be untyped) Bibliographies NO LATE MATERIALS ACCEPTED AND NO PPT MODIFICATIONS

Requirements Things due on the day of your presentation Presentation notes (script) for each person (typed) Any posters or supplementary materials used on presentation day

Helpful Presentation Hints Do not use small font sizes on your PPT, we will be unable to read them Avoid using long paragraphs Include plenty of graphics Don’t read from your PPT, and don’t just read what is on the PPT We can do that ourselves! Elaborate while talking. Good presenters only bullet the important information, and explain (verbally) in detail Don’t read your presentations notes word for word. Practice so they are just a guide.

Group 4 Project: Day 1 Choosing a Topic:  Alien Species (4)  Indicator Species and biomagnification in the food chain (4)  Management of Conservation Areas (4)  Biogeographic factors that affect species diversity (4)  Problems and Challenges with Fisheries (4)  Drought conditions (4)  Air Quality (Acid Rain) (3)  Water Pollution including eutrophication (4)  Deforestation (specifically rainforests) (3)  The Extinction Problem “6 th Mass Extinction?” (3)  Alternative Energy Sources (4)  The Environmental Protection Agency (3) *# in ( ) is how many group members allowed---Bold text are projects that MUST be selected P.0: 8 groups (5 of 4/ 3 of 3) P.1: 10 groups (7 of 4/ 3 of 3)

Group 4 Project: Day 1 With your group, please decide on a topic you would like to base your Group 4 Project on: Only one group can base their project on any one topic The topics in BOLD must be chosen first In numerical order from 1-12 please list the topics you would MOST like to present, to the project you would LEAST like to present. Groups of three must start with the #3 topics, groups of 4 must start with the #4 topics.

Group 4 Project: Day 1 On the back of this sheet write a paragraph/list about your first 4 choices (4 [short] paragraphs total) In your list include any and all background information your group knows about that topic. I will use this during my raffle to determine what topics each group gets.

Let the Reaping Begin!!!

Planning: Day periods (Thursday-Friday) Brainstorm central topics Share ideas and information Define what activities are to be carried out for the rest of the class time available to you Define specific tasks for each group member DO NOT START ON THE PRESENTATION

Action: Days class periods Investigate your topic Collaborate Findings need to be shared with group Pay attention to safety, ethical and environmental considerations IB Animal Experimentation Policy Labs conducted in or outside of class Feel free to ask Mrs. McCobb for materials

Evaluation: Days periods Students share their thoughts, findings, successes, and failures with other students during their minute presentations

Period 0 Presentation Dates Mon 11/9: Biodiversity and Biomagnification Tues 11/10: Alien Species and Problems with fisheries Thurs 11/12: Water pollution and Air quality Fri 11/13: Conservation and The Extinction Problem

Period 1 Presentation Dates Mon 11/9: Biodiversity and Alternative Energy Sources Tues 11/10: Alien Species and Problems with fisheries Thurs 11/12: Water pollution and Deforestation and Drought Fri 11/13: The Extinction Problem and Conservation and EPA

Group /Self/Peer Evaluations Your group will need to complete (1) group evaluation after your presentation Each person will fill out and turn in a self-evaluation (typed) Each person will need to fill out (4) peer evaluation sheets during the 4 days of presentations. 1 max a day.
