HEALTH CHAPTER 1 SECTION 4: BEING A WISE HEALTH CONSUMER

MAKING HEALTHY CONSUMER CHOICES CONSUMER: Anyone who buys products or services for personal use. **As a teen you are making more decisions every year about your health, including what products and services to use.**

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A PRODUCT -Safety: Read the product labels and other information supplied with the product to determine its contents and possible safety issues. (ex. Are you allergic?? Are there harmful toxins?) -Cost: Check to see if there are other brands or other products that will give you the same results at a lower price. Ex: Generic Brands -Warranty: Does it have an offer to repair or replace the product if there is a problem? If so, how long is it good for and what does it cover? Ex: Cell Phone

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN PURCHASING A SERVICE -What kind of education and experience does the person have? (ex. Required degree, license, certification) -Does this person have references? (ask for names and telephone numbers of people who have used this service before) -Have any complaints been filed with the Attorney General?

EVALUATE THE INFORMATION YOU RECEIVE ABOUT A SERVICE OR PRODUCT -Is this source qualified to speak on the topic? -Does the source bring a bias, or slant, to the topic. (ex. Are they trying to sell you something?) -Are there other reliable resources that reach the same conclusion? -Is the information current and up to date?

THE EFFECTS OF ADVERTISING ADVERTISING: The public promotion of a product or service. **Businesses spend MILLIONS of dollars each year because they want to attract customers!** **Ads can let you know what products and services are availible, but they rarely provide the information you need to make wise choices.** Have you ever bought a product based on an ad??

COMMERCIALS Tilted Kilt Advertisement: kM Diet Pill Advertisement g

HEALTH FRAUD FRAUD: The illegal act of a person who tells lies to obtain money or property Ads on Websites “Click Here” (All Posters Story) QUAKERY: The illegal act of selling useless medical treatments or products. (Health Fraud)

WARNING SIGNS OF QUACKERY 1.Someone claims that a product or treatment is the only possible cure for a health problem. 2.The promised results seem too good to be true. 3.A product or treatment is said to cure many different ailments. 4.A product is said to contain “special” or “secret ingredients.

YOUR RIGHTS AS A CONSUMER The Right to Information -You need information to make wise choices and enough information to make an informed judgment about whether a product or service will be safe and effective. Consumer Protection -There are government agencies out there that help protect consumers. (pg. 23) The Right to Complain

PROPER WAY TO COMPLAIN Think about if your cell phone isn’t working properly…… 1.Identify the problem -Be clear about what is wrong 2. Decide on your goal -Do you want a refund, replacement, repair, credit? 3. Collect documents -Gather receipts, warrantees 4. Identify the person in charge -Who has the power to deal with the problem
