The LiCCo Project and it’s role in delivering local, national and international coastal change messages Exe Estuary Winter Forum – 17 th February 2015

What is “LiCCo”? Living with a Changing Coast was started in late 2011 following an initiative between the EA and the Conservatoire du Littoral Designed to develop and share knowledge and best practice in understanding and communicating coastal change, both in key UK organisations, and across the channel The Environment Agency has been the Lead Partner, responsiblefor delivery and management of the project in the UK and France It is an EU match-funded (ERDF), dual-nationality, multi-partner project based on study sites in south west UK and northern France.

Project Partners – who, and why? French partners (academic and NGO) selected for their expertise in the disciplines of Socio-economics, Benthic species, Ecology and Coastal Management. UK Partners (government and NGO) selected for their wider inputs to coastal management in the study sites and expertise in stakeholder engagement

 Increased engagement within UK FCRM Strategies in the Exe Estuary and Poole Harbour  Promotion of Shoreline Management Plan philosophy in France – taken to a central Government level  Future Scenario Planning to prepare coastal communities and visitors for change  Dissemination and sharing of Stakeholder Engagement Practice based on project experience and capitalising on that of other projects past and present  Build Networks to enhance resilience and encourage adaptation within coastal communities and in the larger context of the channel area Key Goals

Key Deliverables  Education Package specifically designed for UK Key Stage 1-3 using real examples around the Exe estuary and Poole Harbour  Engagement Toolkit to help partner organisations and other interested parties (including affected communities) work together to find pragmatic options to the affects of change  “Two Countries, One Sea” report to demonstrate the similarities between the French and UK channel coastlines, and to evaluate each other’s differing approaches to a common problem  Suite of leaflets, newsletters and information boards provided to communities on the Exe and around Poole Harbour regarding changes that may be coming, and seeking to help people become involved

 Householder guides for Swanage and Studland (Dorset) to help residents understand the change that their Shoreline Management Plan policy, or the SLR predictions may bring  State of the Exe Report co-funded by LiCCo, a fundamental document for stakeholders at all levels on the Exe estuary  Website – licco.eu – a fully comprehensive record of our activities, as well as a database of information produced and collated during the project.
