Chelmno was a fairly large camp. It operated from 1939 to The prisoners in Chelmno were mostly Jewish, but Czechs and Soviet prisoners of war were put there. Gas chambers were used to kill prisoners, and at least 152,000 people died in Chelmno. Not all of these deaths were from gas chambers though. Many of them were caused by disease, starvation, and over working from forced labor. Chelmno was liberated by Soviet troops in A Nazi train drops Jewish prisoners off at Chelmno. jewishvirtuallibrary.org

Zyklon B or Hydrogen cyanide, is a highly poisonous gas used by the Nazis to kill “inferior peoples”. Zyklon B was delivered in crystalline pellet form. It turns to gas when exposed to air. Zyklon B was originally as an insecticide. It was adopted by the Nazis in 1941 in Auschwitz for the purpose of the final solution. Zyklon B also had an odor originally, that was put in by the company that made it to alert people of its presence, but the Nazis had this substance removed. All boys and girls 10 and older were expected to be apart of “Hitler Youth” starting in It was a state sponsored organization that would train children to serve the third reich. Hitler Youth was first attached to the SA but later became its own organization. Children in Hitler Youth wore brown shirts and armbands with a swastika. A Hitler youth group salutes Hitler.

By the late 1930’s Warsaw (Poland's capitol) was considered one of Europe's most exciting cities, but that all changed in 1939 when Poland was invaded by Nazi troops. By 1940 nearly 500,000 Jew were barricaded in a large section of Warsaw, known as the Warsaw Ghetto. There was little food in the Ghetto and without medical supplies, disease ran rampant. Jews in Warsaw died at a rate of about 50,000 per year. Nazi soldiers also killed many Jews in the middle of the street for fun. Beatings, shootings, torture, and mass executions were common. Warsaw was liberated on January 17, 1945, by Soviet troops. Starving children sit on the curb.

The SS was formed in 1925 as Hitler’s personal body guard. It was formed as a branch of the SA originally but by 1933, the SS was 52,000 men strong and was made its own military organization. The SS assumed responsibility for the final solution, which was the annihilation of all European Jews. The SS was split into three sections. Leibstandarte, Hitler’s personal body guard, Totenkopfverbande, in charge of all concentraiton and death camps, and the Verfugungstruppen, an elite combat unit known for its extreme fighting tactics. Auschwitz was actually a network of smaller concentration and death camps. It was designated as the main place for the final solution due to its size. Prisoners from all over Europe were sent to Auschwitz for extermination. Over three million people died in Auschwitz, 90% of the being Jewish. Auschwitz was also the first camp to use Zyklon B for mass murders, starting in Auschwitz was liberated by soviet troops in The main gate of Auschwitz
