3. RESETTLEMENT IN THE EAST THE EASTERN AREA OF GERMAN CONTROL UNDERWENT A RACIAL PROGRAM, THIS AREA WAS LOOKED AT AS HITLER’S LIVING SPACE. THE SLAVIC PEOPLE THAT LIVED IN THE EASTERN AREA WERE LOOKED AT AS LESS SUPERIOR THAN GERMANS.

4. HEINRICH HIMMLER HE WAS IN CHARGE OF THE RESETTLEMENT PROGRAM HE REMOVED SLAVS FROM THE AREA AND REPLACED THEM WITH GERMANS THE SOVIET UNION BECAME AN AREA WHERE SLAVS WERE USED AS SLAVE LABOR

5. SLAVE LABOR IN GERMANY FOREIGNERS WERE SENT TO GERMANY TO WORK BY 1944, 7 MILLION EUROPEAN WORKERS WERE LABORING IN GERMANY. THEY WORKED ON FARMS, IN INDUSTRIES AND MILITARY CAMPS

6. THE HOLOCAUST THE DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO EXTERMINATE JEWS. THE SS WAS GIVEN RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FINAL SOLUTION = GENOCIDE OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE

7. REINHARD HEYDRICH HE WAS THE HEAD OF THE SS’S SECURITY SERVICE AND ADMINISTERING THE FINAL SOLUTION. EINSATZGUPPEN – Special strike forces to carry out Nazi plans. All Polish Jews were put into ghettos. Living conditions in ghettos were horrible. Mobile killing units – round up Jews in the Soviet Union, execute them and bury them in mass graves.

8. THE DEATH CAMPS 1942 – Jews in countries occupied by Germany were rounded up and packed into trains and shipped to Poland to live in extermination centers, the largest was AUSCHWITZ. The prisoners either worked or were gassed. Jews were also shipped from France, Belgium, Holland, Greece and Hungary.

9. THE DEATH TOLL Germans killed 5-6 million Jews, over 3 million in the death camps. Nazis were also responsible for the killing of another 9-10 million non- Jewish people by shooting, starvation or overwork.

10. WHAT WERE THE ALLIES THINKING? The Allies were aware of the concentration camps but chose to concentrate on ending the war. Not until after the war did they learn the full extent of the Holocaust.

11. THE NEW ORDER IN ASIA JAPAN had conquered Southeast Asia under the slogan “Asia for the Asiatics.” Plan:  To get anticolonists on their side.  Promise the people that they could establish local governments.  Use economic resources for Japan’s war machine.  Natives used as workers.

12. CLASSWORK ASSIGNMENT DUE TODAY Reread “New Order in Europe” pages 824-825 and “The New Order in Asia” pages 828-829. In writing compare the goals and methods of Hitler’s “New Order” with Japan’s plans to create an “Asia for Asiatics.”
