NIKHEF Annual Meeting, December 18, The LHC Project Status report to the NIKHEF annual meeting Jos Engelen Based on last week’s reports to CERN Council by Lyn Evans and JE

NIKHEF Annual Meeting, December 18, The LHC Project The accelerator The experiments Computing This talk will concentrate on the accelerator, this meeting on experiments and computing

NIKHEF Annual Meeting, December 18, 2006 The LHC experiments are in general making good progress: detector construction, detector installation, detector commissioning (including Trigger/DAQ and off-line software) All experiments face extremely tight schedules, with the ‘beam pipe closure date’, August , determining the date beyond which no major installation activities can be planned ‘The coming 10 months will be extremely intense’ WLCG: very good progress, consistent with experiments’ schedules LHC experiments and LCG

21 Dipole interconnection

22 Progress Report: interconnections

23 Closure of sector 7-8 on November 10, 2006

24 Interconnections Revised schedule Sept. 2006

25 Pressure test of Sector 7-8 During the pressure test of Sector 7-8 (25 th November) the heat exchanger tube in the inner triplet failed at 9 bar differential pressure. The inner triplet was isolated and the pressure test of the whole octant was successfully carried out to the maximum pressure of 27.5 bar.

26 Pressure test of Sector 7-8 B DFB circuits E, F C & CM, D Incident at 12 bar Restart of the pressurisation

27 Inner Triplet: cold mass

28 Inner Triplet: end view

29 Cooldown of Sector 7-8 The inner triplet has been isolated from the rest of the octant and flushing with helium gas has started in order to clean the circuits before cooldown. An in-situ repair procedure for the inner triplet heat exchanger is being validated and will have to be implemented on all 24 cryostats.

33 Engineering run: objectives Provide a firm platform for the commissioning to 7 TeV and provide adequate lead time for problem resolution. Courtesy M.Lamont Optics: –β*= 11 m in IR 1 & 5 –β*= 10 m in IR 2 & 8 –Limited by triplet aperture Crossing angles off –1, 12, 43, 156 bunches per beam Separation bumps - two beam operation Shift bunches for LHCb –4 out of 43 bunches, or 24 bunches out of 156 Solenoids & Experimental Dipoles etc. off (to start with) Commission essential safety systems Commission essential beam instrumentation Commission essential hardware systems Perform beam based measurements to check: - Polarities - Aperture - Field characteristics Establish collisions Provide stable two beam operation at 450 GeV Interleave collisions with further machine development, in particular, the ramp.

34 Conclusion and milestones Last magnet deliveredNovember 2006 Last magnet testedJanuary 2007 Last magnet installedMarch 2007 Machine closedAugust 2007 First collisions 450 GeVNovember 2007 First Collisions 7 TeVJune 2008 A solid and confirmed progression of transport, installation interconnection rates as well as of quality assurance (mechanical, electrical, etc) and commissioning. The first sector (7-8) was pressure tested on Saturday-Sunday November 25. A problem was found in the inner triplet but the rest of the sector was successfully tested. The CERN has shown its ability to solve the various production and installation problems (e.g. QRL, DFB) it has encountered; the present ones are being addressed and will be solved. The engineering run at 450 GeV for 2007 remains a top priority.
