BACKGROUND Evaluation of Impact of ‘Productive Ward’ commissioned by ONMSD I8 Acute Hospitals across Irish Health System invited to participate 14 Acute Hospitals involved across 4 HSE Regions Study commenced in February 2013

BACKGROUND Recommendations arising from evaluation of The PW within the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust, argue that PW needs to be viewed within the context of care delivery which is person- centred. ‘measures showed us that we had improved on our Key Performance indicators… if we could show that the work we had done had made us more person-centred, then that would have been much more valuable than some of the measures we actually did’

BACKGROUND Thus, implementation of the PW needs to be set within an overarching framework of improving the patient experience to ensure that account is taken of additional significant objectives such as: developing partnerships with patients and their families in the delivery of their care ensuring practice is person-centred enhancing staff engagement and team effectiveness.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES AIM The overall aim of the study is to examine the impact of the ‘Productive Ward Programme’ across 14 sites within the Irish Health System Specific objectives include: To examine how the PW initiative facilitates the development of person-centred workplace cultures for staff. To examine how the PW initiative improves the experiences of patients and their families.

METHODOLOGY Research Design – Cross Sectional Survey Design Instrumentation - Staff Context Assessment Index (range 1-4) - Assists practitioners in assessing & understanding the context in which they work Person-centred Practice Index (range 1-5) – measures the extent to which staff rate their work setting to be person- centred

METHODOLOGY Instrumentation - Patients Person-centred Climate Questionnaire – Patients (range ) - Evaluates to what extent the climate of health care settings are perceived by patients as being person-centred Patient Experience Questionnaire (range 0-100) - systematically gathers the views of patients about the care they have recently received Full ethical clearance was sought prior to project commencement and approval was granted via specific Regional & Hospital Ethics Committees

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

METHODOLOGY Sample 6 Acute hospital sites across Ireland Staff Response rate n=86 Patients Response rate n=126 Procedure Nurse-led initiative Questionnaire packs Returned anonymously via internal mail

RESULTS - PATIENTS Patient Experience Questionnaire Ranged from 73% - 90% across settings Mean score =84.5% Variability in mean score statistically significant Person-centred Climate Questionnaire Ranged from % across settings Mean score =105.6 (range 17 – 119) No statistically significant differences

RESULTS - STAFF Person-centred Practice Index All 17 constructs positively scored (Range 1 – 5) Highest scored construct – Developed Interpersonal Skills (4.5) Lowest scored construct – Supportive Organisational Systems (3.2) Context Assessment Index All 5 constructs positively scored (Range 1 - 4) Highest scored construct – Respect for Boundaries (3.3) Lowest scored construct – Evaluation (2.6)

CONCLUSIONS Acute hospitals generally providing person-centred and positive care Staff rated workplace environment within acute hospitals as conducive to providing person-centred care

CONCLUSIONS Preliminary results indicate that organisational culture has an impact on the quality of care provided Person-centred care positively correlated with patient experience of care Further analysis when data set complete.
