WRITING PARAGRAPHS

Organization page 96 Paragraph a paragraph is a group of sentences that develops and idea. A good paragraph presents info in a logical manner. A paragraph has a topic sentence, usually at the beginning and supporting details. a good paragraph has unity which means all the sentences support the same idea. a good paragraph is coherent meaning it is sensible and logical (sounds right) try # 6 page 99

TOPIC SENTENCES the topic sentence is usually written first and expresses the idea of the whole paragraph. if the topic sentence is poor you will likely be surprised at one or more of the supporting details read paragraph on page 100 for example try # 4, 5 page 102

PARAGRAPHING start a new paragraph for each new idea (don't put a new idea at the end of a paragraph to relate it to the next. see example page 103) both the introduction and conclusion should be in their own paragraphs. try # 1 page 104

TRANSITION transitions show a relationship or connection between two ideas or two paragraphs. transitions allow a smooth flow from one idea to the next. (makes the passage sound better) try # 2, 3 page 107
