2 If you build a tower of bricks what will happen if you just stack bricks on top of each other with nothing in between them; what might happen eventually? Paragraphs use transitions to make sentences in the paragraph flow together. In an essay or theme, we use whole sentences to create the transitions that connect all the ideas.

9 Model Detail Paragraph
(from a paper on Bertrand Russell, written in March 2008) Two social causes that he put a great deal of effort into were the Nuclear Weapons Movement and protesting the Vietnam War. After World War II, the United States and Russia started a nuclear arms race. They each stockpiled thousands of nuclear weapons. People became frightened of the dangers and started a movement to try to stop it. Bertrand Russell participated in this in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. He believed strongly that Britain could set an example to the world, leading to gradual disarmament of the powers. In his later years, Russell was a strong critic of the Vietnam War. He believed that the war was immoral and dangerous to civilization. Russell also turned against the United States. Because of his strong beliefs against the war a lot of young people in the United States looked to him as a role model. Although he was looked up to at that time because of his antiwar beliefs, what he is best known for today is his many accomplishments in philosophy and mathematics.
