Slide 2 What is a carbon footprint? Carbon footprint measures a vehicle’s impact on climate change, in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, measured in tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted annually. It's all about fuel economy: 1 gallon of gasoline = 20 lbs. of CO2. Reduce carbon footprint by choosing a car with better gas mileage Source: fueleconomy.gov, carboncounter.org

Slide 3 Air pollution score Air Pollution is the human introduction into the atmosphere of chemicals, particulates, or biological materials that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or damage the environment. Air pollution scores rate cars and light-trucks based on how much smog-forming air pollution they emit. Gas burns cleaner than diesel and thus emits less air pollution, but much improvement has been achieved by current diesel exhaust after-treatment technologies (e.g. SCR). Source:

Slide 4 Diesel & Environment 4 main components regulated by the EPA and CARB Environmental Protection Agency (Bin 1 – Bin 10) California Air Resources Board (LEV, ULEV) ■ HC: Hydro Carbon ■ CO: Carbon Monoxide ■ PM: Particulate Matter ■ NOx: Nitrogen Oxides Gas burns cleaner than Diesel (PM, NOx) SMOG: LOCAL Problem Considered major factor in global warming: Increase in ■CO2: Carbon Dioxide Diesel burns less fuel and thus less CO2 Global Warming: GLOBAL Problem Diesel Gasoline- Hybrid
