Slide 1 2 Inside the housing of the converter are honeycomb-like masses designed to maximize surface area for contact with the gases Stainless steel housing for converter Carbon dioxide (CO2) Water vapor (H2O) Nitrogen gas (N2) 5 These less harmful gases are then expelled as exhaust from the vehicle’s tailpipe 1 Raw exhaust from a vehicle’s engine includes hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, and these gases flow into the body of the catalytic converter 4 These metals and other trace chemicals act as catalysts driving several chemical reactions, which in the presence of heat and oxygen, convert the input gases into carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen gas Hydrocarbons Carbon monoxide (CO) Nitrogen oxides (NOx) 3 The metal or ceramic substrate of this honeycomb structure is covered with a washcoat of aluminum oxide and a thin layer of the metals palladium, rhodium, and platinum Main chemical reactions 2CO + O2 2CO2 C2H4 + 3O2 2CO2 + 2H2O CO + NOx CO2 + N2 Catalytic metals (Pd, Rh, Pt) Substrate (metal or ceramic) Washcoat (Al2O3)
