Here are some characteristics of a computer:  Fast - a computer can add millions of numbers per second.  Reliable - a computer can do different tasks quickly and accurately, and can continue working for hours or days.  Programmable - a computer can store and use instructions you give it. 6

Computer Concepts Asian Institute of Computer Studies Types of Computer: Supercomputers- fastest computer in the world. They have very high processing capacity, speed of calculation and are able to perform multiple tasks. 8

Computer Concepts Asian Institute of Computer Studies Types of Computer: Mainframe computers- refer to computers manufactured by IBM that are compatible and descendant of the system/360 line. Servers- are computer used as the main computer in a network serving and connected to several other computers. Personal Computers- is a computer designed to be operated by an individual whose size, price and capabilities are determined by the usual application the person uses it for. The PC today would be either a desktop computer, or a portable computer either as laptop or a tablet computer. 9

Computer Concepts Asian Institute of Computer Studies Software Software - refers to programs made of instructions that allow you to tell the computer what to do.  Operating system software - are programs used to start up and control the different parts of the computer. This also serves as the link or interface between the computer and the human user. – Ex: Windows, Linux, UNIX, etc. 18

Computer Concepts Asian Institute of Computer Studies Software Application software - are programs used by users for specific tasks like word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics and multimedia presentations. – Ex: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Photoshop, Flash, etc. Programming language - are programs that can allow users (or programmers) to create other programs. Ex: Visual Basic, C++, Java, etc. 19
