QUICK WRITE: OBSERVATIONS ON SOCIETY Write about a problem you see with society. Try to think of one that we don’t pay enough attention to now. Describe the problem, why it’s a problem, and a solution (if you can). Remember to write the title of the assignment (above) and the date (August 25, 2014) on the top of your paper. You have 4 minutes to write before we revise.

OBJECTIVE, AGENDA, & HOMEWORK Objective: Students will identify word choice used by an author to convey purpose and tone. Agenda: Quick Write & Revision Quarter 1 Overview Focus Lesson: Intro to Literary Elements in Poetry Reading: “Look Up” by Gary Turk Homework: Remember to bring your book with you to class each day. Make sure your parents/guardians sign your syllabus if they haven’t already.

QUARTER 1 OVERVIEW Statement of Inquiry and Due Dates Rubric on the Back In groups of 4, read over the rubric. One person will read the 1/2 category, another will read the 3/4, and so on. As you read, underline or circle words, skills, or terminology that stand out to you. Make sure you tape your golden-colored sheet into your notebook before you leave.

FOCUS LESSON: NARRATIVE POETRY A poem that tells a story. Generally longer than the lyric styles of poetry because the poet needs to establish characters, setting, and a plot. Examples of Narrative Poems “The Raven” “The Highwayman” “Casey at the Bat” “The Walrus and the Carpenter”

FOCUS LESSON: AUTHOR’S PURPOSE To inform, to persuade, or to entertain.

FOCUS LESSON: TONE Tone, in written composition, is an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. Tone is generally conveyed through the choice of words or the viewpoint of a writer on a particular subject. Every written piece comprises a central theme or subject matter. The manner in which a writer approaches this theme and subject is the tone. The tone can be formal, informal, serious, comic, sarcastic, sad, and cheerful or it may be any other existing attitudes.

FOCUS LESSON: TONE VS. MOOD Q Basically, mood is the feeling you (the reader) get when you read a story. Whereas tone is the feeling the author has toward the topic, text, or audience.

“LOOK UP” BY GARY TURK Purpose: To inform about our society’s obsession with technology and persuade us to live life in the moment Tone: contemplative, critical, didactic, earnest, forthright, reflective, and/or sincere Word Choice: What words, phrases, or lines does Gary Turk use to help you understand his tone? Discuss with a partner.
