Recommendation 1 Failure to implement this service results in increased pressure on ED departments and compromises patient care

Recommendation 2 It is essential that ED staff can move such patients quickly to the most appropriate facility

Recommendation 3 Failure to fully implement this model will significantly impact on the ability of the medical workforce to meet the clinical challenges of the future.

Recommendation 4 Benefits include mortality reduction, lower admission rates, early and safe discharge, reduced lengths of stay and more appropriate use of investigations

Recommendation 5 Less than a third of departments have the appropriate staffing to deal with their current casemix.

Recommendation 6 More than half have no such mechanism in place to better respond to peaks in patient volumes and acuity.

Recommendation 7 Fewer than one in twenty have full 7 day integration

Recommendation 8 Almost half of EDs have no access to on-site community teams.

Recommendation 9 85% of EDs are not supported by fully functioning 7 day services

Recommendation 10 The College welcomes the announcement by Monitor of a proposed change in the marginal tariff from 30% to 70% and will expect the money derived from this to be invested in resources and processes to eradicate exit block.

Recommendation 11 81% of acute trusts have made no amendments to standard terms and conditions for doctors

Recommendation 12 Only one in ten units have confidence in the reliability and scope of the data they collect.

Recommendation 13 Most respondents indicated that such arrangements are not in place; they clearly should be.
