Kathleen Lynn served in the 1916 rising as chief medical officer, her and Constance Markievicz were responsible with delivering medical supplies and ammunition to the garrisons via car before Lynn joined the city hall garrison. When the rebels surrendered she was found with a loaded revolver and served a short term in Kilmainham Gaol for her involvement in the rising.

Lynn experienced discrimination over her gender when applying for positions in hospitals, she realised the need for a new hospital from her work with the poor in inner city Dublin and with a group of female activists formed Saint Ultans hospital for infants, the first Irish hospital fully managed by women in The hospital grew explicitly and became the centre for tuberculosis vaccines from It closed in 1984.
