2 Early Live & Education  Madeline Leininger was born on July 13,1925 in Sutton, Nebraska  She grew up in a farm with her family  After graduating high school she joined the U.S. Army Nursing Corps to pursue her nursing degree  Earned her Nursing Diploma from St Anthony’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1948  Received undergraduate degrees from Mount St. Scholastica College and Creighton University in 1950

3 Education  Dr. Leininger received her Masters in Science in Nursing, with a minor in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and Psychology from Catholic University of America  Obtained a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Washington in 1965  She became the first Professional Nurse to receive a PhD in Cultural and Social Anthropology

4 Professional Achievements  Dr. Leininger is recognized worldwide as the founder of Transcultural Nursing  In 1968 she founded the Council on Nursing and Anthropology  In 1974 founded the Transcultural Nursing Society and the Journal of Transcultural Nursing  She served as Dean of the University of Washington School of Nursing from 1969-1974  Dr. Leininger also served as Dean and Professor of Nursing at the University of Utah College of Nursing from 1974-1980

5 Professional Achievements  Dr. Leininger also served as faculty at the University of Colorado  At Wayne State University she served as Nursing Professor and later as Professor Emeritus of Nursing  Dr. Leininger served as President of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing  In addition, she is the author of more than 30 books and published more than 200 articles

6 Later in her Life  At the age of 69, in 1995, Dr. Leininger retired as Professor Emeritus from Wayne State University  In 1998 Dr. Leininger was names a Living Legend by the American Academy of Nursing  Dr. Leininger was inducted in the Nebraska Nursing Hall of Fame in 2009  Madeline Leininger died at the age of 87 on August 10, 2012 in her home in Omaha, Nebraska
