UNIT 7 seminar! All about HIPAA, confidentiality and PHI!

ACCURACY Remember that documenting everything is mandatory. Documenting is also legal: info must be accurate, easily understood, legible, no spelling errors. What is documented also travels between providers and clinics, hospital etc. Helps establish care for patient.

JCAHO- The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO, which is pronounced "JAY-co") is a nonprofit organization that sets quality standards for healthcare organizations of all types, including hospitals, community health clinics, and nursing homes.

To receive JCAHO accreditation, a healthcare facility must meet the organization's minimum standards for quality healthcare services. Many of these quality measurements relate to the quality of the healthcare data maintained by the facility. JCAHO recognizes that quality data helps medical facilities provide quality services to patients.

PHI PHI stands for: protected health information. Providers must review requests for amendments of PHI and act on them within _____ days 60 How often are patients entitled to receive an accounting of disclosures of their PHI without charge? Once a year

Suppose a married woman comes to the physician's office for a pregnancy test. Who is allowed to access her PHI? Anyone whom the patient has designated to access her PHI Complaints regarding patient privacy must be filed within how many days from when the patient knew or should have known that an act occurred? 180 days

HIPAA TITLE I- Title I of HIPAA regulates insurance reform. It limits the use of pre existing health conditions that in the past would have kept the patient from getting coverage. Title I of HIPAA regulates insurance reform. It limits the use of pre existing health conditions that in the past would have kept the patient from getting coverage. TITLE II- Privacy and security laws that affect patients.

Which of the following is not true regarding HIPAA laws? 1.Patients have more control over their records. 2.Patients can make choices on how their personal information is used. 3.There are few boundaries set on the use and release of records.

According to HIPAA you do NOT have a right to the original record. HIPAA was developed in part to assure the confidentiality of medical records. HIPAA compliance is the medical assistant’s responsibility Questions that patients have about HIPAA should be answered by the medical office.

Risk Management – A risk is any occurrence that could result in patient injury or any type of financial loss to the healthcare facility. This is identified as a sentinel event by JCAHO. An “unexpected occurrence involving death or serious injury, or the risk thereof.”

Time Management – “Work Smart” Use your time efficiently. Prioritize your duties and arrange schedules Plan tasks that need to be done that day Stay on scheduled throughout the day, unless emergencies develop.

CONFIDENTIALITY Why is confidentiality important? What can happen to you if you break confidentiality?
