Warm-Up What makes something alive? Is the common cold a virus or a bacteria? When is your project (Data Table and Graphs) due?
VIRUSES PA State Standards:. What are VIRUSES? 1) A nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) surrounded by a coat of protein. 2) Viruses are not considered to be alive.
Viruses. At the boundary of life, between the macromolecules (which are not alive) and the prokaryotic cells (which are), lie the viruses and bacteriophages.
Viruses Versus Living Organisms
Doesn’t belong to any kingdom -It’s not a plant or an animal. -It’s not a fungi, protist, or bacteria. WHAT IS A VIRUS?
Structure, Function, and Reproduction
VIRUSES. SIZE of VIRUSES  Viruses are so small they must be measured in “nanometers”  1,000 nanometers = 1 micrometer  1,000 micrometers = 1 millimeter.
VIRUSES. Viruses are particles containing: 1. Nucleic acid 2. Protein coat They can reproduce only by infecting living cells.
Viruses. Learning Goals 1)Understand the structure of a virus 2)Provide support evidence to answer the question, “Are viruses living?” 3)Explain the two.

VIRUSES ARE THEY ALIVE OR NOT???

STRUCTURE OF A BACTERIOPHAGE (A VIRUS THAT INFECTS BACTERIA) HEAD PROTEIN COAT GENETIC MATERIAL TAIL NECK BODY TAIL FIBERS

HOW DOES A BACTERIOPHAGE REPRODUCE? A I C R E

1. Virus attaches to outside of host cell. 2. Virus injects genetic material into host cell. 3. Virus genetic material takes over the host cell's activities (controls). 4. Host cell is forced to make and assemble new virus particles (reproduces). 5. Host cell bursts, so the new viruses can escape to infect more cells.

T M M B B B A B B A A A B A B A VIRAL INVASION

HOW DO WE FIGHT OFF INVADING VIRUSES? Viral infections cannot be cured/treated; only symptoms can be treated. Antibiotic treat bacterial infections NOT viral infections!

The Bad News and the Good News BAD 1. DISEASE: -Annoying diseases include: measles, mumps, colds and flu, warts and chicken pox. -Serious diseases include: hepatitis, smallpox, rabies, herpes, encephalitis, HIV and yellow fever. GOOD 1. Vaccines can help you develop immunity to certain diseases. 2. Viruses can be used as specific pesticides. 3.Viruses are used to genetically engineer bacteria to produce useful substances. 4.Gene Therapy may one day treat genetic diseases
