M I N A The Main Causes of the Great War

Militarism Franco-Prussian War = Rapid mobilization, fast deployment –Well trained & equipt armies –Soldiers had to be educated & conscripted –Leaders have to be competent (logistics) –War would rely on movement & be relatively short... we know better today

Naval Arms Race Germany vs. Great Britain HMS Dreadnought ‘feared nothing’ leveled the playing field 1909 Britain ordered the construction of 8 battleships Admiral Von Tirpitz –Naval law 1898 – 17 ships will be built in 7 years –Naval law 1900 – 2 flagships, 4 battle squadrons of 8 battleships each, and 4 reserve battleships were to be constructed over 17 years, doubling the size of the German Navy Great Britain responds by allying with Japan and creating the Entente w/ France

Militarism Germany was competing with Russia and France to expand their armies Germany1.3m5.0m France0.73m4.0m Russia0.40m1.2m

Super Sneaky Fellow Kaiser Wilhelm II Built up German army and navy Determined to make Germany a top nation. Distrusted by other powers “Germany must have its place in the sun” “The world belongs to the strong.” I love... Gooooold and Germany

M ilitarism (give your own brief description) I N A

M ilitarism I N A lliances (name the two alliances and who was in each)

Imperialism The word ‘Imperialism’ means~ Land equals power, which countries are the most powerful? Why would a country want to take over another country?

~Competition over Colonies~ Germany was losing the competition for overseas colonies to Great Britain, France & Spain. They stepped up (or messed up in my opinion) their game – WELTPOLITIK (Wilhelm II & Chancellor Leo von Caprivi) and the competition got heated!

Kruger Telegram Wilhelm sends to Stephanugus Kruger (Boer) congrats on the victory against GB in South Africa!

M ilitarism I mperialism (define and explain how this led to war) N A lliances

Nationalism The word ‘Nationalism’ means~

M ilitarism -putting most of a countries money and focus on military I mperialism When a stronger country takes over a weaker country N ationalism Extreme pride in your country A lliances Triple Entente- France, G.B., Russia Triple Alliance- Austria- Hungary, Germany, Italy

Franco-Prussian War 1871 Alsace-Lorraine March through Paris Crowning in Versailles 5,000 million marks Leads to Frances Revanche movement

Balkans, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, Russia Turkey losing control! Serbs, Greeks & Bulgars are indep. Southern Slavs of A.H. want to join w/ Serbia Russia supports the independence of the Slavic people & they want the straights of Constantinople to be controlled by their peeps

Significant People Wilhelm II – fires Otto Von Bismarck and hires Leo Von Caprivi –Weltpolitik (navy & imperialism) Admiral Von Tirpitz – Naval expansion Russophile King Peter of Serbia Baron von Aeronthal of Austria-Hungary is not down for diplomacy (strong arm them into doing what you want!)

M ilitarism I mperialism N ationalism A lliances The assassination of Austria-Hungary’s Archduke Franz Ferdinand

All of the Countries involved miscalculated the length and casualties that would later be associated with the war. They believed it would be quick and glorious!
