Divide decimals What is the answer to these divisions? 6 ÷ 3 In each case the answer is 2. The answer to a division is not changed if each number is multiplied by 10 or 100 or 1000….. 80 ÷ 2 Multiply each number by 100 This may seem strange, but think of it in terms of money: 60 ÷ ÷ ÷ 3000 This gives us a way to divide decimals. Example0·8 ÷ 0·02 = 40 so 0·8 ÷ 0·02 = 40 £0·80 ÷ £0·02 How many 2p coins make 80p? 40

To divide decimals Change the number you are dividing by into a whole number Do this by multiplying by 10, 100 or Do exactly the same to the number you are dividing. Divide to find the answer. Example4·5 ÷ 0·5 Example2·64 ÷ 0·2 45 ÷ 5 so 4.5 ÷ 0.5 = ÷ 2 Multiply each number by 10 You need to change this into a whole number = 9 Multiply each number by 10 so2·64 ÷ 0·2 = 13.2 = 13.2 You need to change this into a whole number

Here are some more examples. Divide decimals Example12 ÷ 0·03 Example5·4 ÷ 0· ÷ 3 so 12 ÷ 0.03 = ÷ 9 Multiply each number by 100 You need to change this into a whole number = 400 Multiply each number by 100 so5·4 ÷ 0 · 09 = 60 = 60 You need to change this into a whole number Example0·084 ÷ 0· ÷ 2 Multiply each number by 1000 so0·084 ÷ 0 · 002 = 42 = 42 You need to change this into a whole number
