Leadership and Systems Theory Video

Leaders are the Key Treatment 1.Leaders function as the church family’s “differentiation,” the immune cells of the whole 2.Leaders promote responsibility in others 3.Leaders look for where the virus of anxiety begins and how it is reinforced 4.Leaders of the group design a picture for the future and advance the vision 5.Leaders are like the immune system of the body

Systems: Restoring Balance 10 ACTIONS THAT KEEP A GROUP ON THE SIDE OF GROWTH: 1.Having a plan 2.Expressing problems in terms of relationships 3.Knowing what triggers anxiety 4.Handling anxiety on the level of consciousness 5.Being willing to invest in what is going to be 6.Identifying strengths and resources 7.Creating options 8.Remaining on the side of challenge (tolerance of pain, threat, sabotage) 9.Following a plan 10.Asking questions

Systems: Restoring Balance (cont.) HOW CAN LEADERS PROMOTE HEALTH, BE OUR SALVATION RATHER THAN OUR RUIN? 7 RESPONSES LEADERS CAN FOCUS ON TO PROMOTE HEALTH: 1.Self, not others 2.Strength, not weakness 3.Process, not content 4.Challenge, not comfort 5.Integrity, not unity 6.System, not symptom 7.Direction, not conditions

Top Issues Facing St. Paul’s Leadership Policy Oversight Job Descriptions - Executive Council - Staff - Committees - Ministries Accountability Church Governance Training Mission / Vision

Leadership and the Mission / Vision What matters most, is not what the vision is but what the vision does Palace Guards Organization chart

Governance History at a Glance Church Council Model Policy Based Governance Approved on February 7, 1998 (16 Years ago) Shifted Oversight and Policy Setting to a “BoD” Senior Pastor and Staff had more authority and responsibility Eliminated the board of elders Created Discipleship Ministry Team and Pastoral Care ‘Board’

Rev. Don Abdon and Dr. John Carver Lay Led Council makes descion that encompass the entire congregation The boards are primarily task groups which organize themselves. Staff Led Board sets policy and monitors compliance In the place of multiple boards the staff recruits “ministry teams” who assist them in accomplishing ministry goals. Ministry teams are directly responsible to a staff person.

Key Policy Governance Principles Mandates are clear Expected Outcomes Limits Responsibilities Authorities Accountability Reporting

Learning Goals for St. Paul’s Governance Concepts – Mandates, limits, responsibility and authority, staff led cf. to lay led, etc. Terminology – Title consistency, avoid vagaries, drift, etc. Uniformity – avoid double and triple delegation, conflicts and power struggles Trust Building – Permission giving, empowering

Summary Start reviewing, revising and overseeing policy Start reviewing, revising, and overseeing job descriptions Start reviewing, revising, and removing any vagaries or conflicts in mandates, limits, and roles and responsibilities Start linking all ministries to staff leaders Start drafting the organizational chart Start researching training opportunities Thank You!!!
