Mixed Basket A WIC in-service in 4 parts June 2016

Part 4: Nutrition Education Resources

eWIC is changing the way we do business in WIC A new generation of moms have different expectations

We have new options for Nutrition Education ChopChop magazine is for parents of older children Online NE lessons make access easier

Have these handy for this in-service Copy of ChopChop magazine sent to your clinic earlier Staff Guide - Online NE (instructions and lesson list) Online NE instructions for participants (2 versions) Policy 823 Using Online Lessons

ChopChop magazine Not just another pamphlet to hand out!

A version just for WIC

Flip through your ChopChop What do you notice about the magazine? Who do you think is the target audience for the magazine? How could you see yourself using it for nutrition education?

ChopChop is designed for interaction

Engage the older child Use the magazine as a way to engage 3-4 year olds in nutrition education when parents report “everything is fine.” Consider asking the child what they think. “Which of these would you like to eat?” “How could you help mommy make one of these recipes?” “Which fruit do you think would be good in this recipe?”

Engage the caregiver Save the magazine for engaging families with older kids. Affirm great parenting and point out cooking activities they can teach their child. Take advantage of the recipe ideas and skill building articles to ask about food preparation at home.

ChopChop is not for the waiting room… WIC has trouble retaining 3 and 4 year olds. ChopChop can help us show families how WIC can be relevant and of value, even as their children get older. By saving the magazine as something special to provide to families with 3 and 4 year olds, it can act as an incentive to bring children back.

(Example of a marketing bulletin board) Just for 3 and 4 year olds ! Recipes! Activities for the kids! New Get your copy at your 3 or 4 year olds next certification appointment

Talk about your agency’s plan for using ChopChop

Online NE Lessons - Important NE options for the eWIC world

We’ve all worried about the disadvantages Is online nutrition education really effective? Without interaction, how do we keep participants engaged? How will we know to issue benefits?

We all know the advantages of online NE Millennial parents are much more likely to get their info online. Lessons can be done anytime, anyplace. Benefits can be issued over the phone – no trip to the clinic required!

With we have more options 15 new online lessons, accessible by smart phone 10 of these lessons are appropriate for caregivers of older children

How are they different? Can use a smart phone or other mobile device Learn by viewing web links (sites, handouts, videos) Answer questions to determine readiness to learn Access via its own website Can’t access with a smart phone Learn by completing a lesson that may include handouts and videos Complete a pre- and post-test to determine what is learned Access from our website

How are they the same? Both can be accessed on a computer Both offer a completion certificate Both need the family WIC ID number Both allow WIC staff to look up completion on a website Both have a variety of lessons for different participant categories

Take a look at the “Staff Guide – Online Nutrition Education”

Does participant understand written and spoken English/Spanish? Yes No Encourage participant to complete a WICHealth lesson No Yes Does participant have a smartphone with internet access? Help participant to receive nutrition education in the appropriate language Does participant have 30 minutes of uninterrupted access to a computer with internet and Adobe Flash? Encourage participant to complete a lesson from Health Bites Encourage participant to return for in-person nutrition education Yes No Who can we offer online NE?

Low or medium risk women Caregivers of low or medium risk infants and children Those interested in online NE Participants who can read and understand either English or Spanish Participants who have access to a device (computer, phone, or tablet) to do the lesson

Before you start offering online NE… Make sure you know your agency’s policy and procedure for offering online NE (See Policy 823 for guidance) How will we schedule participants for online NE? How will we make sure participants know how to access the online lessons? How will we know when they have completed the lesson? Who and how will benefits be issued after the lesson is complete? How will we document which lesson was completed in TWIST? How will we follow up if they don’t contact us with completion?

Before you start offering online NE… Become familiar with the lessons available Learn how to access the websites Review at least one lesson for each participant category from Health Bites and WICHealth Learn how to check for lesson completion

Which lessons will you review?

Before you start offering online NE… Determine your role in offering online NE 1. Offering lessons to participants 2. Acknowledging completion, issuing benefits 3. Following up

Step 1: Offering lessons at certifications Offering NE is part of the Certifier’s assessment and NE plan during the cert: Based on your assessment and your recommended NE plan, are they a good fit for online NE? Which online lesson would you recommend for them? Which month should they notify the clinic about their lesson completion?

“Online NE Participant Instructions”

Step 1: Offering lessons at certification Provide the caregiver with instruction on accessing the lesson and notifying the clinic upon completion. Instructions are different depending on whether they are accessing Health Bites or WICHealth. Instructions need to be customized with your clinic contact info. Make sure they know the month to contact you and what they need.

Step 2: Acknowledging completion & issuing benefits

Look up completion in WICHealth.org or Health Bites For WICHealth.org – log into the staff website Use your agency Username and Password

1. Select your 2. Search by participant 3. Enter search term info

Search result show lessons completed

Certificate shows their goal and what they plan to do

Step 2: Acknowledging completion & issuing benefits

Contact WICHealth.org for any questions about the website

Step 3: Following up on online NE at the next certification Certifiers will want to connect what the participant learned online to the NE provided at the last certification and to what is going on now.

Online NE Part 1: Jill and Jack Jill is breastfeeding healthy 6-month-old Jack without problems. She works part- time and has a cell phone. What makes her eligible for online NE? Which lesson would you recommend? What instructions would you offer? Part 2: Jill s her info Jill s the information about completing her online lesson when she is on her last month of benefits. What steps would you take now? How would this work in your agency?
