Context How the environmental factors effect the price of the BlueMotion Polo ? How Volkswagen’s recycling policy effects the price of the BlueMotion Polo?

Polo 1.4 TDI 80PS DPF Starting from £12,355 CO2 emissions 99 g/km Fuel Consumption (mpg) 57.6 (urban) 88.3 (extra urban) 74.3 (combined) 59 kW / 80 hp strong three cylinder -TDI Longer gear ratios Specialised Aerodynamics Light Alloy Wheels with low resistance rolling tyres

Sales 2007 The Volkswagen Polo was the 9 th best selling car in Europe 294, % 2007 Mike Collier, MC Top 10 Selling Cars. Retrieved November from documentid= The Volkswagen Polo is the 10 th best selling new car in Europe Volkswagen the best selling manufacturer VOLKSWAGEN POLO: 25,564 (-9.9%); 151,358 (-0.1%) Difficult economic conditions hit year-to-date new-car sales figures retrieved November from

The difference in price between the basic 1.4 model and the Bluemotion 1.4 model is almost 28%.

Sales Despite the range of cars on the market now that offer increased fuel economy the high fuel costs across Europe have caused a fall of 15.6% on new cars being bought. Automotive : European auto sales decrease retrieved November from As the Bluemotion polo is almost 28% more than the basic 1.4 model. Even though road tax for the Bluemotion polo is free and the running costs are low sales of the polo have dropped in the last year from 294,762 to 151,358 units.

Si-Con Process The VW Si-con process uses mechanical treatment on shredder residue from end of life vehicle recycling to use as raw materials. The Si-con process differs from traditional dismantling as it has many more processes involved therefore being able to filter the waste more effectively.

Si-Con Process Life cycle assesment retreived November from SiCon_Process.-bin.acq/qual-DownloadFileList.Single.DownloadFile.0001.File/sicon-verfahren.Par.0002.Download.pdf

Si-Con Process The VW Si-con process allows more than 95% of shredded residue to be reused. Process steps include; Crushing, Screening and Separation based on physical parameters such as density, grain size, magnetic saturation, electrical conductivity and optical characteristics. Si-con Process retrieved November from

These are the main products produced from the process Shredder Granules (hard plastics, rubber) Shredder Fibres (foams, textile fibres) Shredder Sand (glass, rust, iron particles, heavy metals) Si-con Process retrieved November from

This diagram shows environmental effects that VW Si-con process has compared with simple dismantling Life cycle assesment retreived November from SiCon_Process.-bin.acq/qual-DownloadFileList.Single.DownloadFile.0001.File/sicon-verfahren.Par.0002.Download.pdf

This diagram shows how by increasing the amount of plastic materials as well as light and non ferrous metals installed into a vehicle the environmental burden rises when applying the VW si-con process. Life cycle assesment retreived November from SiCon_Process.-bin.acq/qual-DownloadFileList.Single.DownloadFile.0001.File/sicon-verfahren.Par.0002.Download.pdf

Conclusion By Volkswagen using the Si-con process they are able to recycle 95% of end of life recycled material. This means that as they are able to recycle a wide range of raw materials themselves such as plastics, foams and heavy metals they are able to save on buying the raw materials. Therefore overall the Si-con process not only is profitable for the environment but it also reduces the costs for Volkswagen in their production process.
