Topic Lunar Survival Mission Aims  To use with teaching staff as an example of how to embed STEM in non-stem areas  To introduce subjects in a fun way  Provide in class resources Level Level 1 Method Can be used as an icebreaker or team building exercise at the beginning of the school term. All slides apart from slide 2 and slide 5 (answers) to be printed off and given to the students. Teacher to go through the slides 1 and 4 and explain what needs to be done Equipment  Laptop/Projector  Pens/Pencils  Printer Duration Minutes

Lunar Survival Mission Briefing Sheet You are on a mission to the Moon, to relieve a team of Lunar Scientists of their 6 month research project. As you near the moon your shuttle begins to experience problems. Luckily you and you team make it to the surface of the moon, but crash land, on the lighted side of the moon, 22 miles from the Lunar Research Facility. Most of your equipment is destroyed in the crash leaving only 15 items intact. Considering the following information you must decide which 9 items from the list provided are most essential for your survival as you make your way to the LRF and list them in order of importance. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Average Walking Speed is 4 mph 50lb of Oxygen lasts approx hrs During the Day temperatures on the Moon can reach up to 123 C. There are approximately 3.78 litres in a Gallon

Lunar Survival Mission The following 15 items were left undamaged and intact after the landing; * Box of Matches* Food Concentrate* 15ft of Nylon Rope* Parachute Silk * Portable Heating Unit * 2x.45 Calibre Pistols * 1 x Case of Dehydrated Milk * 2 x 100lb Oxygen Tanks * Stellar Map* Life Raft* Magnetic Compass * 4 x Gallons of Water * Signal Flares* First Aid Kit, with Injection Needles * Solar Powered FM Receiver/Transmitter Lunar Survival SheetPoints

Lunar Survival Mission Answers given in order of importance below One point given for the correct answer, with additional points, as listed, for correct position on the list. Lunar Survival SheetPoints 1 2 x 100lb Oxygen Tanks No oxygen on Moon x Gallons of Water Essential for survival Stellar Map Navigation Food Concentration Supplement Energy Solar Powered FM Receiver/Transmitter Communication ft of Nylon Roper To aid travel over rough terrain First Aid Kit, with Injection Needles In case of injury (though needles are useless) Parachute Silk To help convey equipment Life Raft Shelter and to help convey equipment Signal Flares No oxygen so can not burn x.45 Calibre Pistols Lack of gravity so limited propulsion x Case of Dehydrated Milk Required water which is limited and valuable 0 13 Portable Heating Unit Lighted side of the Moon is hot (approx. 123 C) 0 14 Magnetic Compass Moons magnetic field is different to Earths’. So it won’t work properly 0 15 Box of Matches No oxygen so can not burn 0
