The Great Sphinx of Giza The Great Sphinx of Giza

This is an image of a sphinx and a pyramid in modern day Egypt. These structures have been there for over 4,000 years and are a major attraction to tourists today. They were built between 2589 and 2504 B.C.. The Sphinx is a 241foot (74 m) long monument carved out of limestone bedrock of the Giza Plateau. It has the face of a man and the body of a lion. The mythical creature is seen in art throughout the ancient Middle East, as well as in India and Greece. The face of the giant statue at Giza may have been based on that of King Khafre. Efforts at conserving and restoring the Sphinx go back at least as far as 3,400 years.

The Great Sphinx of Giza, partially excavated 1878 How does the appearance of the Sphinx differ from the Zoom In image?

The Pyramids were constructed to hide the tombs of the Pharaohs. The first pyramids were step pyramids which helped the pharaoh climb the steps to join the sun god Ra in the sky. After that (4,500 years ago), the largest pyramids were built to for pharaohs Khufu and Khafre. Until about a hundred years ago these pyramids were the tallest structures in the world! No earthquake could destroy them. Each pyramid was built from more than 2 million blocks of stone and each stone weighed as much as a small elephant. The limestone coverings were stripped by later peoples for building use. In the pyramids were a lot of false doors to trick grave robbers but they didn't work!
