Questions for warming up 1.In a whole, what subjects are you learning in our school? 2.Among these subjects, what are the subjects in which you learn science? Physics ; Chemistry ; Biology; IT

Discussion 1.What do you learn about for each field of science? 2.How are you learning these science subjects? Learning knowledge ; Doing experiments; Doing research on them------

What do you learn about for each field of science? In chemistry we learn about the way different liquids and materials react with each other. In physics we learn about the laws of the universe, for example about Newton and the reason why all things on earth fall down. In biology we learn about life on earth, for example by looking at the structure of cells.

chemistry  science of elements and their laws of combination and change element substance gas, liquid, solid chemical change chemistry experiments

physics  science of matter and energy and of interactions between the two matter power energy physical change physics experiment

biology  science of life and of living organisms animal plant living things gene cell protein biology experiment

in a biology lab looking at something through a microscope

In a lab Listening 1 Mrs. zhu

safety in the lab experiments Long hair Gases flames 1. What is the most important thing students should remember? 2. What is the first thing students should do when they come into the lab? Follow the teacher’s instructions. Listen and Tick Safety comes first! Listen and answer

3. What should students be careful smelling from bottles? 4. What is to be done when anything gets into your eyes? 5. What should students do before leaving the lab? Clear everything away and leave the classroom neat and clean. Wash your hands with water and soap. Turn off the lights and shut the window. Bottles may contain dangerous gases. Immediately wash your eyes with a lot of water.

Speaking: New inventions and discoveries in modern times

Maglev train Maglev train is a vehicle that is suspended on the air above the railway and can run with high speed by the interactional force of electromagnetism.

Speaking Listen and read: Building a High-speed Maglev Train fast and clean / it has no wheels and no engine / it doesn't’ make any noise Advantages Disadvantages It’ a waste of money. It’s much too expensive.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the followings in groups

1. Is cloning a good thing or a bad one? Advantages: *It can help some women have babies. *It can help medical research. Disadvantages: *It is not natural to make people. *Someone may use it to do strange things that may do harm to our human beings.

2. What does nuclear energy bring us? Advantages: *It makes enough electricity for us. *It’s a limitless reource. Disadvantages: *It may cause deadly environmental pollution. *It costs a lot of money to build /repair a power station.

3.What do you think of computers ? Advantages: *It makes communication cheaper, easier and faster. *It offers the most up-to-date information. Disadvantages: *It can be unsafe because of viruses. *It may cause lots of unfavorable problems. (over weight, eyesight decline, too much radiation, lack of rest……)

4.Are space flights worthwhile? Advantages: *It makes research of outer space possible. *It may take satellites into space. Disadvantages: *It’s very expensive and dangerous. *It may be used in a war.

Homework 1.Fully preview the reading part. 2. Read the new words

Creative work If you were a scientist many years later, what do you think you would try to invent or discover?
