The to becoming a successful manager Markiesha House Senior Operations Manager

Definition of Manager O Management is defined as “the act of engaging with an organization's human talent and using the physical resources at a manager's disposal to accomplish desired goals and objectives efficiently and effectively.” (Boundless Textbook, 2016)

Simply Put Management consist of:  Planning  Organizing  Staffing  Leading/directing Controlling an organization or group of one or more individual in effort of accomplishing a goal.

There are 5 major functions in management

PlanningControllingLeadingStaffingOrganizing

# 1 Planning O “Planning is the process of thinking about and organizing the activities required to achieve strategic objectives.” (Boundless Textbook, 2015) Levels of planning Strategic Tactical Operational

Planning Examples O Implementing strategic planning groups to identify company needs O Develop timelines O Conduct gap analysis O Formulate vision and mission statements O Establish objectives

# 2 Organizing O Organizing is when managers make decisions, co- ordinate employees and resources, that reflect the mission statement, objectives and goals that were identified in the planning function.

# 3 Staffing O Acquiring, training, appraising, and compensation of employees. Images of staffing in management - Google Search. (n.d.). Retrieved February 05, 2016,

# 4 Leading Leadership is motivating, learning and inspiring new ways of thinking. Leadership is the process of influencing staff to ensure that the objectives of the organization are met Leadership involves motivating, influencing, and coaching others to achieve their full potential

Leadership Examples O working collaboratively with employees in a team environment O Sharing in accomplishments – not solely taking credit O Working late with employees to complete projects – show examples by doing

# 5 Controlling Establish realistic and achievable goals Monitoring and measuring employee performance Monitoring and measuring financial performance Controlling resources

Management styles What are the different types?

3# management styles  Directing Tells employees what to do  Delegating Empowers employees  Discussing Ask questions & listens to employees

Directing Strengths Weaknesses O Employees are rewarded for following directions O Learning opportunity for employees O One way communication O No authority / decision making lies on the manager O Does not encourage creativity

Example “Bob please schedule a meeting for me at 2:00p.m. January 25 th 2017 at TGIF in Greenbelt Maryland through outlook calendar today.”

Delegating Strengths Weaknesses  Employees and managers discover skills they were not aware of  Employees have a chance to succeed  Take off some of the workload  Everyone gets to contribute  People learn by doing  Loyalty and trust are built  Fear of relinquishing control  Micromanaging creates distrust  Employees can feel dumped on  Creates situations where a person does all the work but has no authority  Roles & Priorities get confused

Example “Bob I need you to schedule a business meeting for me. You come up with the time date and place and let me know all the details”

Discussing Strengths Weaknesses O Promotes a two-way communication O Goals are easily established through brainstorming O Decisions are made collaboratively O Vocal employees can easily hijack and control the process O Works only where there are opportunities to enforce to influence answers to questions O Manager can easily sway opinions to his advantage

Example “Bob, I would like to have a meeting with you so we can go over some resumes for the open positon in HR. I would like your feedback as to whom may be a good candidate for the position.”
