I. Some Problems You Often Meet in Your Writing and the Way Out. 1. Having too few vocabularies 2. Do not know if the sentences are correct 3. Translate the sentences in a Chinese way

The way out In order to write out good sentences in English, you must try you best to learn the sentences you have learned before by heart. Read the texts again and again, use the sentences you have met in your text books, do not make a sentence in a Chinese way.

Try to take in the sentence patterns and idioms, do not use too many slang words. ×I’ve walked so much today my dogs are really killing me. √ I’ve walked so much today that my feet are really hurt.

5. Make use of quotations properly “Never too old to learn”, we have so much to learn in the future. 6. Avoid the short form of the words × I don’t know. (informal) √I do not know. (formal) 7. When practice writing, use double space for your easy correcting. ×I was much disappointed not to be able to went to the jazz concert on last Friday. √I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday.

VI. How to make a good sentence 1. Unity: one idea in one sentence ×Shakespeare is perhaps the world’s greatest dramatist, and married when he was only eighteen. √On the evening of Monday, the 15th of September, three days before the date of examination, Mr. Lee received a letter from his father.

2. Emphasis We will never surrender. We will NEVER surrender. We will never, never surrender. Never will we surrender. My name is John. Jone is my name.

4. Use sentence patterns and idioms e.g. There is (are)... ×China has a large number of beautiful places. √There are a large number of beautiful places in China.

VII. Steps for ABC writers  Be sure to catch the topic and main idea. e.g. The Advantages of Travel  Collecting the writing materials 1. Seeing strange and different people 2. Meeting people with different interests 3. Different food 4. Practicing a foreign language
