Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME – 2004) Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME -2002) American Hospital Association (AHA – 1970) American Medical Association (AMA – 1989) Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC – 1970) ABMS Associate Members

Time limited or time unlimited certification depends on specialty and when initially certified Time unlimited certification has no requirements for recertification MOC initiated in 2007 Each Board develops its own program Maintenance of Certification (Continuous Certification)

Potential Future Issues – Listed as “not participating in MOC” – Insurers tie to performance-based reimbursement strategies – State licensing board looking at Maintenance of Licensure – Malpractice carriers giving discounts to participating physicians – Full participation in Medicare/Medicaid billing/payments Maintenance of Certification

Ongoing measurement of six core competencies defined by ABMS and ACGME – Practice-based Learning and Improvement – Patient Care and Procedural Skills – Systems-based Practice – Medical Knowledge – Interpersonal and Communication Skills – Professionalism ABMC Program for MOC

Requirements grouped into four categories: – Part I – Licensure and Professional Standing – Part II – Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment – Part III – Cognitive Expertise – Part IV – Practice Performance Assessment Maintenance of Certification Four-Part Framework

In 2015 the ABMS standards were updated, placing greater emphasis on: - Professionalism - Patient Safety - Performance Improvement - Incorporating Judgment Professionalism Standards

Not required by any accrediting body May be required by your organization Initial Only or Initial and Maintenance Board Certification
