Share your poster with your partner! As I go through the lecture, organize the key points into the categories: Social, Political and Economic You will answer the questions at the bottom later.

To be Collected Friday: Pg. 45A: Reign of terror Book Notes- Any Style Pg. 46A/B- Reign of Terror SAC Pg. 47A: Napoleon SPE Chart

Army vs. Navy Nelson

Battles of Napoleon

The Greatest Extent of Napoleon’s Empire!

IV. Napoleon’s Costly Mistakes pgs A)Continental System – blockade against Great Britain, destroy economy, make continental Europe more self-sufficient, Britain did it better… B)Peninsular War – French marched into Spain, took over govt., Spanish guerrilla forces attacked, French army severely weakened C)Napoleon establishes his relatives as kings in the countries he conquers. These people are not competent rulers. The citizens of these countries revolt.

Napoleon and Nationalism- Napoleon unites France by telling the French how wonderful they are, that their culture is better than everyone else’s. The French army spreads this message to all the lands they invade. However, this actually hurts Napoleon’s ability to conquer these nations, because each country decides that their nation is Better than France in order to unite their own people against Napoleon!

Please do a vocab word map on pg. Pg 49A for Nationalism

Pg 49A

D) Invasion of Russia– Meant to punish Czar for selling grain to England ,000 + French soldiers invade Russia Russians pull back and refuse to fight, practice scorched-earth policy, and burn Moscow down. Napoleon marched back to France in winter, lost his army to the cold. 20,000 walk out… “Swallows fell from the sky like stones, frozen in flight in the bitter cold…” Pgs

V. Napoleon’s Downfall pgs Major powers attacked: England and Prussia 1814 – Napoleon surrendered at Liepzig, exiled to island of Elba New king unpopular, Napoleon escaped Elba, returns to France a Hero for 100 days and built a new army in 1815 Battle of Waterloo – Napoleon defeated by combined forces of Russia, Prussia, Austria Sweden and England St. Helena – Exiled until his death in 1821

Where do they go? Social, Political or Economic!?!

Now think about everything you know about Napoleon….and answer the questions at the bottom. What was Napoleon’s greatest mistake? Please use examples and specifics to explain why this mistake was so terrible? What do you think was Napoleon’s legacy to France? That is, what do you think happened during his rule that had a lasting effect on France?

Please get a Pg. 50A/B: Napoleon in Context handout Directions: Read each quote issued by Napoleon and the source information that accompanies it. In the spaces below each quote, briefly explain the context (using the textbook and class notes) and how it helps to inform Napoleon’s ideas at that time. What “Context” mean: What is Napoleon saying and why is he saying it? Is he defending an action? Which one? Is he explaining an opinion? Why does he feel he needs to do that? Use the dates of the quote and what you know about what was happening at that time.

Let’s try one… Document 1 “I can no longer obey. I have tasted command. I have tasted power and I cannot give it up. I love power.” Source: General Napoleon Bonaparte to Andre Francois, private conversation in 1788

Over All…. Taking everything you know about Napoleon together… Do you think he was MORE of a Democrat or an Autocrat?
