C CATCHER IN THE RYE Chapters 9-10

Do Now When something happens (positive or negative), who is the first person you think to call? Why? What is it about this person (as a person) that leads you to rely on him or her?

Ducks I didn't want to start an argument. "Okay," I said. Then I thought of something, all of a sudden. "Hey, listen," I said. "You know those ducks in that lagoon right near Central Park South? That little lake? By any chance, do you happen to know where they go, the ducks, when it gets all frozen over? Do you happen to know, by any chance?" I realized it was only one chance in a million. He turned around and looked at me like I was a madman. "What're ya tryna do, bud?" he said. "Kid me?“ Why does Holden ask at this point in the story where the ducks go in the winter? What do you make of the diction in the line “What’re ya tryna do…kid me”?

Phoebe Read from page 67 What is revealed about Phoebe in this passage? How does Holden seem to feel about Phoebe? Why is this important?

Hazle Weatherfield “Something else she does, she writes books all the time. Only, she doesn't finish them. They're all about some kid named Hazel Weatherfield--only old Phoebe spells it "Hazle." Old Hazle Weatherfield is a girl detective. She's supposed to be an orphan, but her old man keeps showing up. Her old man's always a "tall attractive gentleman about 20 years of age." That kills me” (Salinger 68). What do you make of “Hazle Weatherfield”? What’s the significance of the character’s being an orphan? How about a detective? What do these facts reveal?
