OBJECTIVE Today we will look at how Japan reacted to Imperialism and began their own imperialist ways. Note: Don’t forget that you have a quiz and bellwork grade on Friday!! Look over your notes!!

JAPAN!

BACKGROUND: Japan was ruled by a shogun – military leader Japanese mainly farmers. No trade, NOBODY allowed to leave the country. Isolationist Strain on money and resources made Japanese unhappy

JAPAN OPENS UP In 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry of the US brought the US Navy to Japan Had orders from the President that Japan must open up ports for trade

JAPAN OPENS UP Japanese knew they had no choice but to open up They couldn’t fight the US Navy (China had the same issue with British)

JAPAN OPENS UP Japanese sign an unfair treaty to open its ports to the US and Europe A lot of Japanese weren’t happy about it, so they overthrew the shogun New leader in place: an Emperor named Meiji

MEIJI RESTORATION Over the next 40 years, Meiji begins carries out the Meiji Restoration “Rich country, strong military”

MEIJI RESTORATION The Japanese government sent leaders to Europe to study their technology, military, government, and economies. The goal was to catch Japan up with the west (Euro, US) as fast as possible

JAPAN CHANGES Economy: Build RRs, Banks, telegraphs, factories. Government: Adopted a western style of government where all people have rights Culture: Japanese built schools, voted, and got rid of social classes

MILITARY In Shogun Japan, only Samurai could serve in the military During the Meiji restoration, all men serve in military – this was a HUGE change in society for the Japanese

DID JAPAN BECOME TO WESTERNIZED? Just like Great Britain, Japan was on an island with limited resources With their new military power, they moved to imperialize parts of East Asia

IMPERIALISM

Sino-Japanese war: Japan vs. China Japan wanted resources and trade with China Japan won the war easily, to everyone’s surprise

RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR

Japan vs. Russia Again, Japan destroys its enemy First time an Asian country whooped up on a Euro country Japan gains control of Korea
