Sweden Christmas By: Jessie, Katelyn, Ali John, Austin, Nathan

Saint Lucia The Christmas season in Sweden begins on December 13 th, which is Saint Lucia’s Day. It is the tradition on this day for the eldest daughter acts as Saint Lucia and serves coffee and Lucia buns to her parents in the morning on their bed. Saint Lucia was martyred. Martyred means that she died for her faith.

Decorations The Swedish people decorate their houses with apples, candles, gnomes, straw ornaments, Swedish flags, small red tulips, and the smell of pepparkakor, which are goat-shaped gingerbread biscuit. They put a Christmas tree up two days before Christmas. They make Christmas goats out of straw to guard the Christmas Tree.

Food They serve their foods in courses. The first course is made up of cold fish. It is usually eaten with bread and butter. The next course includes turkey, roast beef, and a Christmas ham. This is usually eaten with some cheeses, a liver plate, salads and pickles.

Food The third course contains sausages, meat stuffed cabbage rolls, a dried cod served with a thick white sauce, oven roasted pork ribs. Now comes the desert. They have pudding. In their pudding they hide almonds and the one that finds the almond in their pudding is the one that is believed to be married the next year. To wash it all down they have glogg which is sweet mulled wine and some coffee to finish off the meal.

Christmas Eve They usually exchange presents on Christmas Eve. When the Christmas feast is over they have a friend or family member dresses up as a Christmas gnome who is believed to live under the floor boards and gives presents. He says funny rhymes that hint at the presents that are inside the packages.

Christmas Morning Swedish people like to go to church early on Christmas morning. God Jul means Merry Christmas in Sweden!
